Mary Mushinsky for the 85th district seat this November. Crouch, 44, is a lifelong town resident looking to earn his first term in elected office. After years of being involved with politics and helping others’ campaigns, Crouch decided to throw his hat into the ring. “I’ve always been behind the scenes and this time I thought the time was right,” Crouch said. “The state really needs to turn things around, so I was like, ‘I’m gonna do it.’” The 85th district is located entirely within Wallingford. Mushinsky, first elected in 1981, is Connecticut’s longest-serving state representative. She earned her current term by defeating Republican Serge Mihaly in 2016 with 57 percent of votes. “My enthusiasm remains strong,” said Mushinsky, 66, who is entering her 20th campaign. Crouch, the only Republican looking to challenge Mushinsky, received the party's endorsement last week. Crouch is the founder of a business, NFP Sports, that partners with youth and high school sports teams to hold fundraisers. Proceeds from fundraisers are split between the business and teams. As a local business owner, Crouch thinks he would bring a new perspective to the seat. If elected, he plans to oppose restrictive regulations on businesses and fight a proposed $15 minimum wage, something Mushinsky said she supports. Crouch said of Mushinsky that “some years I think she's been decent, and then other years I think some of her proposed bills are a little off the mark.” Crouch contended that Mushinsky, who has been one of the legislature’s more vocal environmental advocates, may focus on the environment too much. “She’s really into her core issues, and sometimes I think you lose track of what the average resident is worried about,” Crouch said. “Environment is something to look at, but I don’t think that’s the number one issue in the district.” Mushinsky believes she enters the campaign off of a successful legislative session. Mushinsky pointed to several things she accomplished this year to help her district, including successfully fighting a bill that would have jeopardized millions of dollars in state grant money that Wallingford expects to receive for phosphorus removal upgrades. Mushinsky said she has also continued work on a job training program, “Platform to Employment,” that trains people who lose their job in one field for employment in another. Crouch said he got involved in politics as a student at Lyman Hall High School by helping with Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr.’s mayoral campaign. While at the University of Connecticut, he served two terms as the Connecticut College Republicans state chairman. He has also worked on campaigns for U.S. Rep. Gary Franks and state Senate candidate Gregg Hannan. Crouch serves on the town’s Parks and Recreation Board, an appointed position. He and his wife Simone are raising two daughters, Sophia and Aubrey. His wife is an English language learner teacher at Cook Hill Elementary.
